Injured in an auto-accident? Know what to do?

No one really plans to be involved in a messy auto accident!  But car accidents can and do alter lives in a matter of split seconds.

Be prepared and be informed!   Avoid common pitfalls and mistakes.

Steps you take immediately after can significantly strengthen your case. Be prepared and avoid common mistakes.  If you or your loved one is ever involved in a car accident, here are some critical steps to take immediately after the accident.

  • Call 911 and report the accident as soon as possible

  • Gather information from all vehicles involved (license plates numbers, driver’s name and phone number/email address, and names, phone numbers, and email addresses of other individuals involved in the accident)

  • Collect details from any witnesses/individuals present at the scene, such as names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.

  • Seek medical attention for any pain or injuries, even if you feel your injuries or pain is minor.  Internal injuries are not always obvious or immediately apparent at the time of the accident -- seek medical attention right away if you experience any pain or symptoms.

Medical treatment is essential.  Whether you are at an Emergency Room immediately after the accident or undergoing extended continued treatment with medical providers following the accident, make sure that your medical providers carefully examine you.  Insist on your medical provider to document all
all injuries, diagnoses, and treatments, even if they are minor.

  • A picture is worth a thousand words!  Take pictures of vehicle damage, the accident scene, road conditions and relevant road signs (such as speed limit signs or other relevant signs on the street), and any visible injuries.

  • When it comes to communicating with insurance companies, anything you say can later be used against you.  Don’t talk to the insurance company, give a recorded statement, or sign any documents without consulting an attorney first
